A ROYAL EFFECT FOR PRINCE: SHADOW SCRIM INTRODUCED AT SUPER BOWL HALFTIME

North Hollywood, Calif. – Midway during his performance at Super Bowl Half Time XLI on February 4, a wall of white silk arose dramatically from the stage floor to create a somewhat controversial, yet very memorable, silhouette of Prince during his guitar solo in the song “Purple RainNorth Hollywood, Calif. – Midway during his performance at Super Bowl Half Time XLI on February 4, a wall of white silk arose dramatically from the stage floor to create a somewhat controversial, yet very memorable, silhouette of Prince during his guitar solo in the song “Purple Rain.”

The effect was the brainchild of production designer Bruce Rodgers of Tribe Inc. and Doron Gazit from Air Dimensional Design. During the planning stages of the show, Rodgers approached Gazit to create a giant 30-by-25-foot screen that would pop out of nowhere within seconds. Together they conceptualized and designed a wall of silk that would arise through the floor and undulate from a wind source beneath it. After AirDD fabricated the screen and the powerful fans it took to create the effect, B&R Scenery created a devise that could quickly roll the screen and fans as a complete unit on and off the field.

Despite all the precision planning, the day of the Super Bowl the designers were challenged by an unusually strong and un-seasonal storm. It was touch-and-go to the very last minute if the shadow scrim could even be used. The weight of the fabric in this sort of effect is crucial. Humidity and rain can affect how well it works. And although Gazit recommended the use of a specific lightweight fabric, there was no way of telling how long it would work in the rain. Thinking on their feet, the designers removed five feet from the height of the screen to make it even lighter and decided to launch the effect for as long as it would remain erect before the rain made it too heavy.

Originally scheduled to last for three minutes, the shadow scrim remained up for a little under a minute. Yet thanks to a dramatic performance by Prince using the scrim, this was more than enough time for the effect to make a lasting impact on the audience and the media.
